This sweet-faced boy was picked up on Thursday, January 23, 2003 running down the side of US-10. His leg with the missing foot was bleeding at the stub, so it was assumed that he may have been hit by a car. |

The above photo was taken on Saturday, January 25, 2003. The dog, named KC by 5 year old Natalie Murrey, was very friendly and sweet, and totally cooperated for the picture taking session.
Most dogs in KC's situation are euthanized as soon as their required time is up at the dog pound. But something about KC wormed its way into the heart and mind of a P.A.L. volunteer, Sally Murrey. After much soul-searching and many phone calls, it was decided that P.A.L. would have KC treated by a veterinarian and fostered until he was able to be placed for adoption.
On Thursday, January 30, 2003, KC was taken to see Dr. Barb Todd at Country Veterinary Service in Reed City. It was determined that KC would have most of his leg removed and repaired properly. She said that he had probably been crippled since birth. He had been previously neutered, and was tested negative for heartworm. KC was left in CVS's care to have his amputation.
The photo below is KC feeling pretty groggy before surgery.

On Friday morning, the P.A.L. volunteer went to pick up KC at Country Vet Service. KC was pretty subdued and having a little difficulty balancing with his newly shortened left rear leg. |
After a short car ride, KC got to his foster home where he will recover from his surgery. Tracy of Northwest Shepherd Haven was kind enough to offer him a nice home setting in which to recover. Thanks Tracy and Kevin!
Tracy has reported on Saturday morning that KC seems a little more lively and is eating like a horse!
We are hoping that KC will find a good home after his recovery is complete. He will not be available until the end of February.
If you are interested in this brave boy or would like to help finance his veterinary care, please contact P.A.L. at 231-745-7081. |
KC took over the doggie bed at his foster home!
The photo below is from Saturday morning. He's still looking pathetic but better!

KC is recovering fantastically! At first he was very defensive with other dogs and puppies. Now that he feels better, he likes to romp with his foster mom's other dogs (especially Kami) and even with her other foster puppies! |
Look, even his ears are up! |
Daddy KC (not really!)
KC came to stay at the Murrey's house until a permanent home can be found for him. Special thanks to Tracy and Kevin for fostering him for P.A.L.
If you are interested in adopting KC, please fill out an application. Thanks!
KC finally won over Rufus, and they play like puppies together. |
Adopt Me!
In the middle of May, an inquiry came in about KC. The woman sounded like a great match and all her references spoke very highly of her. So on Friday, May 16th, KC met his future forever mom, Diana.
Diana wanted her vet to look KC over, so on May 20th, Sally took KC over to Dr. Paxton's office in Ludington. He was given a clean bill of health, and went on to the next step of meeting his future doggy sister, Teagan.

KC, Diana, & Teagan
Once introduced, the dogs got along quite well together. KC was going to have a new home!
Below are a few pictures of KC on his adoption day.
CONGRATULATIONS KC!
And special thanks to Diana and Teagan for taking KC into their family! |
Happy for KC, but feeling a little sorry for myself... |
Surprizing as it sound, KC learned how to type in his new home already, and sent a letter to tell us how well he is doing. Once we get his permission, we will post it here.
Thank you to all who helped to make KC's story a happy one! |
